Rosalie Ilunga is the founder of Select Rosie foundation which is a non-profit organization. She lives in Dallas, Texas, and is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo where she was born and raised. Rosalie comes from a large family where she was responsible for planning, organizing the various parties during celebrations and creating an atmosphere of joy, moments of relaxation and unforgettable memories.
Rosalie participated in exhibitions and activities in Los Angeles where she sold African art, statutes, masks, attire and jewelry. In her words, "I was inspired by the song "Esclave" by Papa Wemba, a Congolese musician, in which he demanded the freedom of the African people. So before I sold African art to Mrs. Maxie Vlitz, in Long Beach, Southern California and was not fluent in English, to better explain the content of the music, I translated the song, "Slave" by text in English and Maxie was very happy and she decided to buy my artwork.
In March 2016, during international women's month, I hosted a fashion show in Dallas. A little girl, 8 years old at the time, Vigardie Kimana, inspired me by her comments about the beauty that comes from within. This ignited a fire in my heart to speak to women and young girls to find out what they want in life. Listening to their dreams made me dream of how to help and guide them in the right direction regardless of their circumstances, difficulties or level of education.
When COVID hit, I decided to travel back to DRCongo since everything was shut down in the US. I encountered quite a few youth who were interested in sewing, makeup artistry and other trade-work to get ahead. The ladies had no resources but were still trying to share beauty. Their determination made me organize and host a makeup show/ training and the rest is history. In any case, the demand to learn a trade for survival is great and I need support to help all who come to me; hence, Select Rosie Foundation was born."

Last year, we went to the Democratic Republic of Congo, provided some cosmetic education and a lot of make-up materials to young women who were aspiring Make-up artists from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Some of the products were sold to raise funds while others were donated to help the women start up their new ventures. We also gave free make-overs and make-up tutorials. The ladies bonded over their transformations and reflected on how we can all improve other aspects of life moving forward. It was a blessing sharing beauty one lipgloss at a time and all were thrilled!

Empowering women, one lipstick at a time is not all we do! Select Rosie Foundation is now building partnerships with local artists in different African countries; especially from DRC to raise cultural awareness about African heritage. More importantly, we are helping these local artist get their work out. We work with them in a mutually beneficial way to empower them economically while also fundraising to support disadvantaged youth and women.
